International Airports of Thailand

Thailand's main international airports include Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) in Bangkok, Phuket International Airport (HKT), Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), Hat Yai International Airport (HDY), Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI), Samui International Airport (USM), and U-Tapao International Airport (UTP) near Pattaya. These airports serve as major gateways for international travellers, with Suvarnabhumi being the primary international hub and others catering to specific regions and tourist destinations.

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK):

The biggest and busiest airport in Thailand is Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), located 25 km east of downtown Bangkok. It serves as the nation's primary international gateway and handles the majority of international and a large number of domestic flights, making it the largest and busiest in the country.  Many Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad, have direct flights to Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)

Don Mueang International Airport (DMK):

Bangkok's oldest airport in Thailand and one of the oldest in the world, opened on March 27, 1914, as a Royal Thai Air Force base. It began commercial operations in 1924 and has been a major aviation hub for decades. After being replaced by Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in 2006, Don Mueang later reopened in 2007 and is now a major hub for low-cost airlines. It is Bangkok's second international airport: It is one of two international airports serving Bangkok, the other being Suvarnabhumi Airport. Following the opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport, Don Mueang was initially closed but reopened and now primarily serves as a hub for low-cost airlines. The airport has played a significant role in Thailand's history, including during World War II. It has two terminals: Terminal 1 for international flights and Terminal 2 for domestic flights, connected by an elevated walkway. Airlines like AirAsia operate direct flights to Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) in Bangkok.

Regional International Airports:

Phuket International Airport (HKT):

Serves the popular island destination of Phuket, located in the north of Phuket Island, about 32 kilometres from Phuket City. It serves as the primary gateway to Phuket, handling both international and domestic flights with its two terminals. It is a major airport in Thailand, well-connected to different parts of the country and international destinations. Features Terminal 1 for international flights and Terminal 2 for domestic flights. Offers various amenities, including shops, restaurants, and duty-free services. You can easily reach Phuket City from the airport via taxi, ride-share, or public bus in about 50 minutes to 1 hour and 20 minutes, respectively. Direct flights to Phuket are available from various Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai

Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX)

Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) is Northern Thailand's primary aviation hub, located just south of the city centre. It has a single, combined domestic and international terminal and handles flights to both domestic and international destinations, with direct service to many parts of East and Southeast Asia. The airport is open 24/7 and is considered small, with a smooth and typically quick arrival process. Located in the northern city of Chiang Mai, a significant regional destination.

Hat Yai International Airport (HDY)

Hat Yai International Airport (HDY) is a major international airport in southern Thailand, located in Songkhla Province, serving as a gateway to the region. It handles domestic and international flights, offers a variety of passenger services like shops, ATMs, and currency exchange, and operates transport options including car rentals and airport vans. It is one of the top 5 largest airports in Thailand and a hub for commerce and tourism in the south.

Mae Fah Luang – Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI)

Mae Fah Luang - Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI) is a major airport in northern Thailand, located about 8 km from the city center. It serves as a gateway to the region for both domestic and international travelers, with a history of international flights that are currently suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Managed by Airports of Thailand (AOT), the airport is named after Princess Srinagarindra, the mother of the former King.

Samui International Airport (USM):

Koh Samui Airport (USM) is a privately owned, boutique airport in Thailand on the island of Koh Samui, operated by Bangkok Airways. Known for its open-air, tropical design with bamboo and thatch elements, it is considered one of the most beautiful airports in the country. While primarily handling domestic flights, it also serves international routes to destinations like Singapore and Hong Kong.

U-Tapao Rayong-Pattaya International Airport (UTP)

The main airport for Pattaya is U-Tapao International Airport, located about 45 minutes away in Rayong. It serves both domestic and international flights, but it is still less busy than Bangkok's main airports, which include Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK). While U-Tapao is closer, many travellers still choose to fly into Suvarnabhumi, especially for international flights, and then take a bus or taxi to Pattaya. There are no direct flights from India to Pattaya
